Tiger. Stuck

I have a confession to make. Yesterday, while watching the final round of the PGA Memorial Tournament, I fell asleep.

I’m sure I’m not the first person to fall asleep while watching golf, but I still expected better of myself. It was Sunday, the leaderboard was tightly packed, and some of the best names in golf were tearing up a beautiful Jack Nicklaus course. It still wasn’t enough to keep me awake.

The situation felt like a metaphor for what professional golf has come to mean to me in recent years. An impressive display of professional talent that distinctly lacked enough “wow” factor to keep my brain alert and interested.

Enter Tiger Woods.

16th hole. Par three. Tiger trailing the leader by one stroke. His tee shot goes long and finds some rough just beyond green and above the hole. If he leaves the chip short, he’ll have a very long putt to save par and will most likely lose the tournament. If he’s long, he’s almost certainly in the water. He has to be perfect.

Tiger takes his time, lines up the chip, and proceeds to send the ball straight into the center of the cup. The crowd goes wild, Woods pumps his fist with a vigor we haven’t seen in years, and this blogger is snapped back awake by the roar of the Tiger.

It was a perfect extension of my previous metaphor. When golf start to get boring, Tiger Woods is the perfect remedy. I hardly so much as blinked for the rest of the event.

When I first agreed to write this article, the guiding question was: “Will Tiger win another major?” After what happened in Ohio on Sunday, I can confidently state my position in just one word… yes.

Never mind that Tiger appears to be playing consistently and impressively. Never mind that he most likely has a few good years left in the tank. The primary reason that Tiger is going to win another major is simply because he is Tiger Woods. As evidenced by his heroic shot on 16, the man’s penchant for greatness is simply too powerful to be denied. If Charl Schwartzel can win the Masters, I think Tiger’s got at least one more.
